Our classic Bordeaux pair is a great introduction to Washington wines. This 2-pack contains one bottle of each:
- 2017 Pere de Famille
- 2017 Clos de Betz
Over twenty-five years ago, the first vintage of Père de Famille, the Father of the Family, was resting in the cellar. The quest for vineyards that will express the best of Washington through the Cabernet Sauvignon grape has kept us exploring vineyards from the Western Yakima Valley to Walla Walla year after year. We're always striving to produce a wine that expresses the powerful and penetrating soul of the terroir.
Clos de Betz honors Bob and Cathy Betz’s earliest dreams of starting a winery. In 1973, they stood before one of the foremost temples of French Pinot Noir, the Burgundian vineyard Clos de Beze, struck by the profound way it could exemplify both a sense of place and the purity of its grape variety. They resolved that they would one day produce a wine that manages to convey that ever-elusive but magical marriage of site character and varietal expression. Washington Merlot, with its singular dance of weighty richness and structured minerality, provided the perfect canvas and has formed the core of Clos de Betz since its first vintage in 1998.
2017 started much later with a cool wet Spring. Then on the 10th of May things changed significantly and the growing season produced almost perfect conditions. We were able to pick later than the previous 3 years and harvest lingered over a 6 week period which was perfect.
"The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Pere de Famille comes mostly from Red Mountain yet has small amounts of Yakima Valley and Columbia Valley fruit. Its inky purple color is followed by a terrific nose of black and blue fruits, graphite, tobacco, and leafy herbs. Medium to full-bodied, with good acidity and building structure, it’s another incredibly impressive, pure, balanced wine." 95 pts, Jeb Dunnuck
"2017 Clos de Betz is Merlot-dominated but includes small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, structured vintage for this cuvée and has terrific tobacco, smoked herbs, black cherry, and blackberry-like aromas and flavors." 92 pts, Jeb Dunnuck
