Domaine de Pierres (Field of Stones), is the newest addition to our family of single-site Syrahs. The Rocks of Milton Freewater AVA is named after the large river stones permeating the vineyards there, creating Syrah distinct from any other place in Washington State. Our affection for site-expressive Syrah led us here in 2014, when we purchased the Ancient Stones vineyard and immediately got to work tilling the soil multiple times each year to expose the latent rocks. The results are finally in, and we’re delighted to share the inaugural vintage of Domaine des Pierres.

Ah, the Rocks.  A complete departure from its Yakima Valley brethren, the 2019 Domaine des Pierres is both singular and immediately recognizable.  A brilliant ruby-purple in the glass, the aromatics jump out the moment it’s poured.  A bright core of rich red, blue and black fruit immersed in a complex bouquet of white and black pepper, green olive, violets and dried rose petal.  The palate is full-bodied and plush with a juicy core of liqueur-like fruit: blackberry, raspberry, and cherry surrounded with fresh tarragon, green tea, and lavender.  Expansive and supple texture is balanced by precise acidity which keeps the wine focused and supported by ripe tannins lingering through the savory finish.  Scrumptious now, this will broaden in the cellar for 10-15 years.

The 2019 Syrah Domaine De Pierres is cut from the same cloth as the 2018 and has a wild, Rocks-influenced bouquet of red, black, and blue fruits as well as notes of lavender, flowers, and sweet earth. This plush, ripe, medium to full-bodied Syrah holds onto a good sense of freshness, has ripe tannins, and a great finish. It will be interesting to see if it matches the 2018. This cuvée is 100% Syrah from the Ancient Stones vineyard that was also not destemmed and is still aging in 50% new French oak.
